Jehovah’s Witnesses have been knocking on doors for so many years trying their best to introduce their outrages doctrine. Not getting anywhere they’ll try to leave a copy of Watchtower and Awake.
Founder Charles Taze Russell 1852–1916)
Charles Russell and others in 1870 formed an independent group to study the bible.
Russell during the time of his ministry questioned and debated the beliefs of popular Christianity, unending life of the soul, the fire of hell, Christs return to earth for a thousand years, the Trinity, the world melting with fervent heat.
Russell and Nelson Barbour In 1876 had together produced the book (Three Worlds) and in 1878 edited a religious journal, Herald of the Morning. In 1879 the two separated because of certain beliefs.
In 1879 Russell began publishing the magazine Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence. He said that its purpose was to demonstrate the world was in “the last days” And under the invisible reign of Christ a new age of earthly and human return to the former was impending.
In 1881 Russell founded Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society. And incorporated it in 1884 to distribute tracts and Bibles. Around 1900 Russell had organized thousands of part- and full-time distributors to sell or publicize Bibles, religious tracts, etc. He was appointing foreign missionaries and establishing branch offices and by the 1910s, his organization was maintaining traveling preachers.
The Watch Tower Society’s headquarters was moved by Russell to Brooklyn, New York, in 1909, printing was formed and corporate offices established.
Russell taught that in October 1914, the Gentile Times” would end and at that time it would be replaced by the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth.
Russell died October 31, 1916 at the age of 64.
In January 1917, Joseph Franklin Rutherford, was elected president, nicknamed Judge Rutherford. His election was disputed, when members of the Board of Directors accused him of acting in an absolute authoritative and secretive way of doing things. He brought under one control the Watch Tower Society.
At a convention in Columbus, Ohio, on July 26, 1931 Rutherford introduced the new name Jehovah’s witnesses based on Isaiah 43:10. “Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen” which was adopted by the Board of Directors.
By 1933, the timing of the beginning of Christ’s second coming . his enthronement as king, and the start of the “last days” were moved to 1914. Note, this is called, Premillennialism, Christs return to earth for a thousand years, one of the three main theories of Revelation.
Meaningful changes in administration and doctrine were done between 1917 and 1942.
Nathan Knorr was appointed as president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society After Rutherford died in January 1942. Under Knorr the Society was expanded in many different ways The number of active members had exceeded two million by 1975.
A new translation of the Bible, was commissioned and the full version was released in 1961.
